Addition is simply putting groups together. Young children grasp it best with things they can see and touch.

Start with real objects

Combine two small piles of blocks or grapes and count them all. Seeing "2 and 3 make 5" is far more powerful than a symbol.

Count on, not from one

Once counting is solid, encourage starting from the bigger number: "5... then 6, 7." This is a big step toward mental math.

Play picture addition

Games that show two groups and ask for the total connect the hands-on idea to numerals — a gentle bridge to written math.
